New Trademark Office Fees

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has implemented new trademark fee changes for 2025. These adjustments officially took effect on January 18, 2025, and impact nearly every type of trademark filing.

Whether you're filing a new application, submitting post registration maintenance filings, or using a free form text box, you’ll notice higher costs per class and added charges for things like insufficient information or overly long descriptions.

For business owners, this means it now costs more to protect your intellectual property, and understanding the fee schedule helps you plan and budget more effectively.

Key Changes Summary

To help you prepare and budget accurately, here are the most relevant USPTO trademark fee changes 2025, including updates to post registration maintenance filings, free form text box charges, and other additional fees.

  • $350 Flat Fee for Electronic Applications
The USPTO has simplified its pricing by setting a base fee of $350 per class for all electronic initial applications. This replaces the old Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS) Plus and TEAS Standard tiers. If you're planning to file, this is the new default rate to expect on the fee schedule.
  • Paper Applications Now Cost $850
The cost of filing a paper application has risen to $850 per class. This significant fee increase reflects the trademark office's push toward fully digital filings.
  • New Charges for Insufficient Information and Length
Submitting an application with insufficient information now triggers a $100 per class fee. If the identification of goods or services exceeds 1,000 characters, a $200 fee applies per class for each additional group of 1,000 characters beyond the first 1,000.
  • New Charges for “Free Form Text Boxes”
When identifying the goods or services covered by your trademark, you have two options: use a pre-approved description from the USPTO’s Trademark ID Manual (the “canned” option), or write a custom description using a free-form text box. If you choose the free-form option, the USPTO now charges an additional $200 per class.
  • Higher Fees for Post-Registration Maintenance
Post registration maintenance filings under Sections 8, 9, 15, and 71 now cost between $250 and $325 per class. These increases affect trademark holders who are maintaining existing rights through the USPTO.
  • International Filings Now $600 Per Class
If you're expanding globally, applications through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) now cost $600 per class, up from $500. That’s a 20% fee increase.

Because the changes span multiple filing types, the best way to stay compliant is to review the full rule here and follow the USPTO’s application instructions carefully. A clear, complete filing will help you avoid added costs and processing issues.
